With daily doses of bad economic news and companies laying off workers by the thousands, it’s easy to become discouraged at the prospect of finding a job. The bad news: There’s a lot of competition for a shrinking numbers of jobs. The good news: There’s a lot of competition for a shrinking numbers of jobs!

What do I mean by that?

As a career coach, I’m deluged daily by a sea of poorly written resumes to review for clients. Most of them shudder at the amount of work it takes to tailor and customize a resume. Some take the time to do it; many others refuse. With more and more desperate people on the streets, a well-written resume really stands out!

What do you need for a successful resume?

  • A work history that defines what you did and HOW you did it – results!
  • A tailored approach – each resume should fit the target job and no other.
  • The willingness to spend time (often a few hours) writing a tailored resume.

Of course the resume is just a start. You also have to have a strong network, great interviewing skills, and a savvy eye to negotiate a great salary. It takes lots of work, but you can find a job even in this tough economy.

What are your tips for finding a job in this economy?
