Laura Stack on avoiding social-media addiction

This post is by SmartBrief’s Doris Nhan.

Last month, SmartBrief senior editor Mary Ellen Slayter attended the Society for Human Resource Management’s annual conference in San Diego and sat down with Laura Stack, founder of Productivity Pro, to discuss how to avoid an obsession with social media while maximizing its benefits for your company.

Stack likens an addiction to social media to an obsessive-compulsive disorder, where one feels compelled, without reason, to constantly check social-networking sites. Just how do you stop social-media overkill, yet maintain a balance with workplace goals?

Stack suggests the following:

  • Set up structured routines in your day to check social-media accounts. Just like going to work, eating or sleeping, checking your sites should be something you planned to do.
  • Set specific goals or plans. When you log on, ensure that it’s not a random, aimless activity. Logging on should be limited to once or twice a day.
  • ROI should be measured based on what you hope to achieve for your company. Whether you’re trying to market your company, recruit employees or  stay up with industry trends, your goals should reflect that time spent on social media.

I listened to Laura speak at the SHRM conference and she was incredible! In fact I then bought a signed copy her latest book, "Find More Time How to get things done at home, Organize your life and feel great about it: and looking forward to the next one. She shared so many valuable tools to organize your social media and efficiently use your computer

I felt like you were speaking about me. Actually, I've got a much better handle on it and truly believe in routines/processes just like with checking email.
