Somewhat, if you control the anchor text and they're not nofollow. But as you mentioned, its about what it can do for you if your link goes viral. In some cases its resulted in hundreds of backlinks. But they one think to remember is, not all links are created equal. Its about being in the right neighborhood too. Those are the links that stand the test of time and do the most for you.
