Even with all the fancy new tools in social media, a great blog is still one of the best ways to build and connect with a loyal fan base.
At our recent Word of Mouth Supergenius event, Jason Falls joined us to offer some practical steps you can take to grow your blog’s audience. Jason’s blog is consistently ranked among the most popular marketing blogs in the world, so it was great to hear a few of his big ideas.
What to do:
- Target specific talkers. When Jason began his blog, he targeted specific bloggers in his niche and sought opportunities to engage with them both online and off. Try reaching out to your favorite influencers on Twitter, saying hello at an event, introducing yourself on their blog and, when appropriate, inviting them to check out your great content.
- Take a stand. Great blogs (just like great brands) stand for something. Jason recommends being bold about the issues you care about — even when it goes against what the other bloggers are saying.
- Invite people to engage. Make it obvious you’re open to engagement by asking for comments and responding frequently. And in doing this, Jason recommends staying open to opposing viewpoints because it helps show not just the individual commenter that you’re open to discussion, but the rest of your readers as well.

Being bold or taking a stand is SO important. People don't want to read fluff they want to read something with teeth. Piss people off, Make them laugh, whatever… Vanilla does not bring readers back.
