SmartPulse — our weekly reader poll in Smartbrief on Social Media — tracks feedback from leading marketers about social media practices and issues. Paul Chaney, Internet marketing director for Bizzuka, author of “The Digital Handshake,” and member of the SmartBrief on Social Media Advisory Board, helps create the questions and analyzes the results. We run the poll question each Wednesday in our e-newsletter and feature Paul’s analysis on this blog.
Last week’s poll question: What social media trend are you most sick of reading about?
- I never get sick of reading about social media!, 28%
- Social media in the workplace, 21%
- Personal branding, 15%
- Crowdsourcing, 13%
- Social gaming, 10%
- Privacy issues 7%
- Geotagging 6%
“Much like Christmas dinner, I fall into the “you can have too much of a good thing” category when it comes to reading about social media. I greatly enjoy it, but find myself over-consuming and needing to push back from the table from time-to-time. Nearly 75% of you felt the same way, in one respect or another. Perhaps an alternative to this question should be, “What social media trends do you feel you need to learn more about?” Leave a comment with your answer.” –Paul Chaney

Personally, the only thing that bothers me is when people with no accreditation claim to be “Social Media Experts”
The last thing I would want to do is to deny someone a way to make a decent living, but putting “social media ___” fill in the blank with an adjective for ‘guru’ on your resume because you have a facebook, or twitter account, or both, doesn’t make you an expert. I love reading about Social Media, and social trends in general I just hate the superficial coats that are sometimes layered on top of content.
A good friend of mine wrote a satirical piece about the same concept here: http://reallychill.org/comedy/breaking-news-new-government-program-to-support-social-media-expert-depression/
