Just in time for the holidays, the story map Fifty Largest Shopping Malls in the United States ranks the biggest places to shop by leasable square feet. The map includes the number of stores and levels in each mall, as well as how many parking spaces are available to shoppers.
Aerial views of the malls and their surrounding areas help prepare shoppers for their trips, which can seem overwhelming considering the smallest mall on the list is more than 1.5 million square feet spread across one level.
While the Mall of America in Bloomington, Minn., took the top spot with more than 4 million square feet and 520 stores, Florida, Texas and New York offer the most options for shoppers, each claiming five malls on the list. California and Illinois aren’t far behind with four malls each.
A glance at the map’s feature that points out each of the 50 malls on a map of the U.S. reveals that not one mall in the northwest made the list, but shoppers in the northeastern states have several oversized malls to choose from.
The map also shows that the Mall of America lives up to its name by being significantly larger than the rest of the malls on the list. The Eastwood Mall Complex in Niles, Ohio, which took second place, is a whole million square feet smaller than the Mall of America.
