SmartBrief is partnering with Big Think to create a weekly video spotlight in SmartBrief on Leadership called “VIP Corner: Video Insights Powered by Big Think.” This week, we’re featuring presidential candidate Mitt Romney.
Mitt Romney recalls the leaders who shaped his own leadership philosophy — starting with his mom and dad, and ending with God.
His father, George Romney, was a business and political leader, and young Mitt watched and took notes as he himself grew up and took over the family trade.
The former Massachusetts governor also seeks leadership inspiration from past U.S. presidents.
“Ronald Reagan — as time has gone on, he has gotten smarter and smarter, you know that? His brand of optimism, his recognition that to overcome challenges, you fight to strengthen America — that’s something … [that] I have very much adopted in my own political philosophy.”

Reagan slept through his presidency. And I would vote for that in a heartbeat. Ike played golf through his and I would vote for him too. It seems the less government does, the better we are.
Romney is an empty suit – what a joke!
Reagan was an empty suit, too. Demented most of the time, a mouthpiece for the various players behind the throne. Back in California, where we had him as a (foul-mouthed) Governor, we were chagrined to foist such a hot-air balloon on the nation. But people are happy with slogans, like "the less government does, the better we are." Where is that Fantasyland? And who does what to whom when government isn't there? It's not pretty.
Please pardon my ignorance, but what did Mr. Romney mean when he referred to "The Master" as a religious leader? Is this a term for G-d or Christ preferred by his church?
He was referring to Jesus Christ. This is a term used throughout the Bible to reference him.
Get all the Republican Dwarves together and compare them in terms of substance and presentation. Now that's a matrix I'd just love to see. Maybe it could serve as a scorecard for the remaining — what is is, nine more Republican presidential debates? "Who will be The Survivor???"
Romney is no Reagan.
It is disgusting that a journal of your accreditation would run a puff piece with no research. Reagan raised the tax limit 17 times. The debt increased 85% (as compared to Obama's 35%). Reagan padded the government with 250,000 new jobs to prove big government didn't work (It was Clinton who retired them). Started the anti-union campaign. Dealt with terrorists, selling military equipment to Iran. Ran a covert supply mission to El Salvador where American planes flew down with military equipment and back up with cocaine until Hossenfus was shot down. And according to his own son,Ronald Reagan was unfortunately exhibiting Alzheimer's behavior while he was in office. He was the beginning of the end. Clinton cleaned up the 16 year debacle, only to have the village idiot blow through the surplus, and using the same exact Republican extremist plank they're pushing now that destroyed America, God's gift to humanity. We now seeing a current president who has given us 15 months of growth…I'll go on here, you do the research – and source it. Wake up or I'll drop you.
Go away Mizerski. You pick and choose which “statistics” best support your argument and then present them as the complete picture. I hope people are smart enough to recognize your attempted deception.
Thats an amazing piece of insight there Tom, thanks for sharing that. I mean, ad hominem attacks with no substance are what most of the online right wing rants are about – would you want to continue that tradition or break mould and engage in interesting debate? How about sharing some insights, backed up by facts, and potentially related to the topic of this video? Romney is a smart guy – this is a political grab thats clearly aimed at a certain audience and I am pretty sure he doesn't engage in much that Reagan believed in. But thats what the Republican primaries need these days, pandering to some non-existent past as though it could work in todays very very different world. If Romney is selected for nomination watch him swing towards the middle, especially on social issues.
