Better late than never?

SmartPulse — our weekly nonscientific reader poll in SmartBrief on Small Business — tracks feedback from small-business owners. We run the poll question each Thursday in our e-newsletter.
Two weeks ago, we asked: What do you think of President Barack Obama’s jobs plan?
- It’s too little, too late: 53.04%
- It’s a nice idea, but probably won’t get through Congress: 18.21%
- It’s a solid step in the right direction: 17.29%
- I don’t know enough to form an opinion yet: 10.86%
I completely understand the “too little, too late” feeling. According to a recent Rasmussen Reports survey, the economy remains the No. 1 issue on voters’ minds. Whether it’s the president’s plan or something else, when we’re frustrated, we want action; we want whatever is holding us back to get fixed.
But each time I say “too little, too late,” I’m always reminded of another phrase – “better late than never.” For some individuals, it requires more time to take action. But when they do — wow! — they really take action. Learning how to react to decisions in a timely appropriate fashion is important for any leader of any organization.

It was a slanted survey with all the possible answers either positive in some way or at worst neutral toward the jobs plan. One answer should have been: "It proposes the same failed stimulus solutions and the same increases in taxing and spending that Obama has been preaching from the beginning. It should not be recognized as a new solution."
